In the past three years online poker has changed in a huge way. Not only did the UIGEA pass in the USA, which limited the amount of play US players could do online, but many poker rooms have advanced their software as the market becomes more and more competitive. This has created a better environment for players, because with so many poker rooms out there there is an increase in competition to retain players, which results in better software, bonuses, and customer service.
One of the ways poker sites have competed to gain players is to advance their software. A few poker sites have really taken it to a new level, and developed entirely new software that is generated in a 3D environment to help players feel like they’re actually in a casino. Besides the amazing graphics, there is a social aspect to these sites because they let users interact more at the table, and become “Friends” with eachother through the online poker site.
Although professional online players wouldn’t want to use three-dimensional software, it is appealing to the casual players because they’re just looking to have a good time. Since pro’s prefer to multi table and get the maximum number of hands per hour, 3D isn’t ideal for them, but it is great for the casual/social player. This is who sites like PKR.com and Ladbrokes.com are catering to. Even though they aren’t getting the high limit players, they’re still getting a ton of casual players who would prefer 3D poker.
The reason this is such a big deal is because although pros would prefer to multi table at a site like PokerStars, if there are a ton of fish at PKR they will play there just to take advantage of the weaker players. If the fish play there, and attract the sharks, that is basically the whole market, so 2D poker sites should watch out because their business model is in jeopardy.
I have a feeling that throughout the next few years, 2D poker will become an outdated model. The only restrictions on 3D poker at the moment are that the game play is slightly slower, but as computers advance and processors become more powerful, you will be able to run 3D software at the same speed as 2D software, so it will negate the difference between the two.
Think about it: if you could play 3D poker at the same rate and at the same amount of tables as 2D poker, which would you play? This is the question facing the online poker industry, and will be a very important one throughout the next few years.
