Invictus
This inspiring tale about South African President Mandela rallying his racially and economically divided country through the sport of soccer is the kind of film that Oscar voters love to praise and heap with awards because it makes them feel like a better person. Morgan Freeman is the obvious first choice to play Mandela because he looks exactly like him, and Matt Damon is said to put on a good face as a South African soccer player. Clint Eastwood is directing, what is this, his 3rd film this year?

James Cameron’s 3D opus might just live up to the hype. Early critical reaction has been good and for all the money Cameron spent, he better hope it is. This science-fiction/fantasy fable about Earth’s mining of a hostile planet will obviously touch a nerve with the global warming liberals so it could be a series contender for picture of the year.
Precious
This excruitatingly sad film based on a true story about an overweight sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a broken household, pregnant for the second time by her absent father, this is not the feel good movie of the year. Besides all that, Precious has also made it to the ninth grade despite being illiterate. As depressing as this movie is, “Precious” has a good heart at its core, and is the kind of poor, urban film that Oscar critics would love to vote for.
Inglourious Basterds
Quentin Tarantino’s long in the making opus and retelling of the end of World War II is just as good, if not better, than anyone expected it to be. Tarantino has put his own mark on the war epic with this film and proven that he is more than a one-note, plageristic heavy director. There is serious buzz that “Inglourious Basterds” could be the film that finally gets Tarantino the much deserved best picture Oscar.
