poker bumper pool tables
What is the polished black portion of this table and how I look all right?

It feels like the plastic on the top, but is so strong that I think may be of stone or slate. If it makes a difference is a group of cars / poker table / table what kind of things in the world 1950-1960. I finished and look good, but have no idea where to start with. Please help and thanks.
Most likely is of slate. If this happens, sanding unlikely to work very well. I would suggest sealing or coating with a clear finish (assuming you want to keep the color – but a little darker) If you do not care much about the stone, can be painted (at first, then paint). If you want a simple solution, you can use a tablecloth or table cover (several options here) or … If you have the skills and support (and value) may try to reverse the board on the other side (assuming that the other side is better). This may be more difficult or impossible (which requires removal of the table in the process) depending on how he gets there.
