poker playing cards

Can you make money playing Texas Holdem poker? That’s a question that a lot of people ask themselves. After all, it can be thrilling watching your favorite poker pros play on TV and win lots of cash. Can you really do it yourself, though?
Well, the answer to that is yes. A lot of people make money playing poker. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to do, though. Remember, the life of a poker player isn’t all glitz and glamor like you see on TV. There are two very important things to consider.
Pros and Profits:
First, you need to remember that nobody wins at poker all the time. Even if they play on TV and have been playing for years, they aren’t poker Gods. Watch any tournament. Notice that, even though many pros play, there can still only be one winner. So, don’t expect to win at poker all the time.
Pros and Play Time:
Second, remember that what you see on TV isn’t the only time that the pros play poker. To make a living at the game, most pros play every day for anywhere from eight to twelve hours. Plus, many of them play multiple poker tables at once online to maximize their profit. That all takes a lot of patience and stamina.
Skill Versus Luck:
Another thing you need to realize about poker is that, primarily anyway, it is a skill game. You can’t control which cards you or your opponents are dealt. That’s the luck of the draw. You can control what you do with what you get, though. That’s where the skills come into play.
Another thing that makes poker a game of skill is the player versus player format. What do I mean by that? Well, picture a casino game like blackjack. In blackjack, the idea is to beat the dealer/house. So, you aren’t playing against other players.
In Texas Holdem or other poker games, on the other hand, you have to beat an opponent. So, you’re on relatively equal ground, assuming you and your opponents are of about the same skill level.
Skewing the Skill:
Of course, the idea is to skew the skill in your favor, if you want to make money at Texas Holdem. You see, when players play for free, play at low level stakes or are just generally new to the game of poker, they usually don’t play very well. Bad or inexperienced players are known as fish. The good players, or sharks, make short work of the fish. So, your job is to play at the stake level where you are still a shark, not a fish.
Math Mania:
Finally, remember that poker is a game of math. You have to be able to calculate the odds of things happening, like drawing a certain card at a certain time. Or, at least, you have to be able to memorize the odds of common situations occurring. If you can master the math of poker, you should be able to make money playing Texas Holdem.
