poker split pot

Poker – Texas Hold ‘em, what happens in split pot and all-in situations?

I want to understand what happens when two people have a similar hand, but one is slightly better than the other. Eg. in Texas Hold ‘em I could be holding A-6 he could hold A-9 and we can both make pair of aces.

Also if someone goes all-in on a huge pot, can they only win back twice what they’ve laid out?

Eg. four of us in the pot, pot is $4000 but I go all in at $300. What could I potentially win and what happens to rest of the pot?

Since your A6 is dominated by your opponent’s A9, you could not possibly win outright if both of you wind up with a pair of aces as your final hands. The best you could hope for is to split the pot. For that to happen, his kicker (the 9) would have to not play. The only way for that to occur is if 3 more higher-ranked cards are among the community cards along with the A that made your pairs. For example:

You: A6
Him: A9
Flop: AT4
Turn: Q
River: J

This makes both your hands AAQJT and a split pot. If the river was a 5 instead, you’d lose AAQT6 to AAQT9. Best 5 cards count, always.

As for all-in, you can only win whatever share of the pot your all-in amount covers at the time you went all-in – if your all-in bet met or exceeded the current size of the bet, it covers the whole pot plus any subsequent calls to your all-in. If your all-in doesn’t match the current bet or there are raises after you, that makes up a side pot which you have no claim upon, even if your hand is best.

For your example (and assuming there were not other players who contributed and subsequently dropped out – if there were, your share would be larger), you would win $1200 out of that $4000 pot – the rest would constitute a side pot that would be won by one of the other 3.
